Women donate more to women and girls<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Coinciding with International Women's Day, we share an article published in the Diari d'Andorra by our founder, Marta Alberch, about female philanthropy after being one of the speakers at the EWL last November 20 .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days ago I participated in the Enterprising Women Lab organized by Cultur\u00e0lia and I shared with the attendees some reflections on philanthropy and, in concert, how women are part of it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked up lists of philanthropists, and among the top 21 were 17 men, 3 families, and a single woman, in 9th place, Mrs. MacKenzie Scott (maybe her name doesn't sound familiar to you, but if we introduce her as the ex-wife of Mr. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, we're already there). I have always been under the impression that, usually, men ran the businesses and women, mothers, sisters... took care of the social part. I don't have the answer but historically there have always been women philanthropists although without the visibility of men.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in the middle of the 19th century, Madam CJ Walker Sarah Breedlove, the first African-American businesswoman, is also considered one of the first philanthropists. The daughter of slaves, she was a visionary creating a cosmetics company for black women. And, taking advantage of her position, she became an activist for the African-American community. The Netflix series Selfmade is inspired by his story.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From her to Mrs. Scott there have been many more: businesswomen, TV presenters, actresses and singers, athletes, scientists, from many fields, but, according to expert Anne Monier in an article in The Conversation, female philanthropy remains an invisible phenomenon because there is no research in the matter and the little that is found speaks of the emancipatory power of social tasks for women in past centuries, because we tend to compare it with male philanthropy and, if men give money to certain organizations , women tend to give to smaller organizations in which they are personally involved, and because while women give more, philanthropy is a reflection of our society structured around marriage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
